Influence of Nano-Fillers on the Properties of Polymer Latex Films[1]

The major challenge to produce high-performance coatings from water-based polymer dispersions is the contradiction between the required properties during film formation and the properties of the final film. This problem can be circumvented by combining materials with complementary properties. This Ph.D. project sheds light on the microscopic origin of the widely reported improvement of the macroscopic performance like enhanced scratch resistance. The project comprises:

  • Syntheses of Core-Shell Polymer Dispersions
  • Latex Film Formation
  • Tracer Diffusion Studies (using Forced Rayleigh Scattering)
  • Investigation of Friction and Scratch Resistance (Tribology) as well as Bulk Mechanical Properties (DMTA)
